The Lower Provo River - flowing from Deer Creek Reservoir through Provo Canyon toward Utah Lake - is one of Utah’s most beloved recreation rivers. Class I+ water with steady current, small waves, and twisting turns make it ideal for guided rafting, self-guided rentals, and tubing for ages 8 and up.

Where it runs

Trips on the Lower Provo are operated by our sister company High Country Adventures, the largest rafting outfitter in Northern Utah and the only operator in Provo Canyon with shaded pavilions, private take-out, and parking on the river itself.

The canyon corridor is bordered on one side by 12,000-foot Mount Timpanogos and on the other by 11,000-foot Big Cascade - soaring scenery that is its own draw.

Why the Lower Provo

  • Family-friendly water - Class I+ throughout, suitable for ages 7–80
  • Long season - guided trips operate late April through early October
  • Tubing-friendly - operator steers tubers to rafts/kayaks above 1,000 cfs, but the typical sweet spot of 350-900 cfs is perfect for tubes
  • Wildlife and views - peregrine falcons in the cliffs, big game on the slopes, and some of Utah’s most dramatic mountain scenery

Conditions

The Lower Provo’s flow is set by releases from Deer Creek Reservoir, controlled by the Central Utah Water Conservancy District. The current release reading is below - fed by CUWCD’s data feed. Sweet spot for all activities is 350-900 cfs; above 1,000 cfs the water gets pushy enough that tubing isn’t recommended.
